Timothy Garton Ash on the Crisis in Ukraine

Garton Ash and Snyder have now both written incisive pieces on the Crisis in the Ukraine that I have linked on this blog.

Part of the genius of Putin’s Crimean strategy was to threaten Ukraine east of the Dnieper, thus pushing the West to accept the fait accompli of its annexation in hopes that by tossing the baby to the wolves, he would stop there. The eastern half will be sacrificed next, and then the last bit will be gobbled up. This despite the 1994 Budapest Accord guaranteeing Ukrainian territorial integrity.

It is now a standard trope to write that VP is playing by AH’s playbook, but I was shocked to watch his grand announcement of the pending annexation on the BBC. He was not only using the tactics, he was using the same phrases, people! All that was missing were the brown uniforms.
